Cyberpunk 2077 is the latest open-world RPG by the folks over at CD Projekt Red. The game released in December 2020 and had been eagerly anticipated by fans for many years. It released in a very underwhelming state on consoles that caused a lot of drama in the community. The company is facing a lot of issues right now regarding its stock prices and investors.

One thing that has flown under many people’s radar is the Cyberpunk 2077 experience available on the Sega Genesis.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 On Sega Genesis?

The very obvious answer to this question is NO. Sega Genesis was released back in the 1990s and was home to some of gaming’s finest, such as Sonic the Hedgehog. It was placed directly as a competitor to the SNES and was successful in throwing off Nintendo’s monopoly by taking a total of 45% of the market share.

Considering that even the latest gaming hardware such as the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One is struggling to deliver acceptable framerates for Cyberpunk 2077, it is almost foolish to think that the Genesis could run it. But, there is a game on the Sega Genesis that is very strikingly similar to Cyberpunk 2077 in its gameplay, lore, and setting.

The game in question is Shadowrun. Considering most people’s current choices for playing Cyberpunk 2077, this game should be a very serviceable replacement. Shadowrun is set in a dystopian futuristic city, similar to Night City. The characters in the game also have cybernetics, along with some fantasy and magic elements. If you own a Sega Genesis and can manage to get a hold of this game, definitely try it.

If that is not possible, you can still play these games on your PC or mobile phone via emulators. There is a myriad of emulators to run Sega Genesis games with improved resolution, textures, and framerates.
