To put in simpler words-

  • DualShock 4 Controller: Can be used to play only supported PS4 games. (The official list of supported games is not out. However, you can expect all games which were released recently.)
  • DualSense Controller: Can be used to play both PS4 supported and PS5 games.

Why PlayStation 5 Games Will Not Support PS4 Controller

The new PS5 DualSense Controller comes packed with many features such as Haptic Feedback, Addaptic Triggers, Create Button, Built-in microphone, More Battery Life, 3.5mm headphone jack, and USB Type-C. Now the adaptive trigger and improved haptic feedback is something completely new to the PlayStation 5. The Dualshock 4 controllers don’t offer adaptive trigger and some other functionalities.

Furthermore, Sony has clarified many times that their main focus is the PlayStation 5. Their approach to next-gen is quite different from their peers. They want PlayStation users not to be held back due to previous generation technology. The PS5 games will use the new features offered by the DualSense controller in fullest. Since DualShock 4 controller lacks those features, it is the reason why the PlayStation 5 games will not support the PS4 controller.
